Illinois is divided into 16 Health Information Exchange (HIE) Medical Trading Areas. The Healthcare Consortium of Illinois is responsible for Medical Trade Area 14 and has received a planning grant to address local planning and HIE implementation needs. The goal of the planning grant is to secure the commitment of a majority of stakeholder groups within Medical Trading Area 14 to participate in a health information exchange that will operate as a component of a state-level health information exchange in the future. For purposes of these planning grants, stakeholders include, but are not limited to, hospitals, practicing clinicians, laboratories, pharmacies, health plans, insurers, local public health departments, quality improvement organizations, and hospital associations. The planning grants are intended to encourage stakeholders in all Medical Trading Areas throughout Illinois to establish the governance structures, collaborate with other providers, form the operational framework and social capital necessary to sustain HIE and promote state-level interoperability. The product, produced by working in conjunction with other local healthcare organizations, is a proposal that will address local HIE planning needs.
